Limit large-capacity magazines to gun ranges

I would like to share an idea that I believe would be a good compromise regarding the gun control issue. Instead of banning the sale of assault weapons and large magazines, gun enthusiasts could continue to purchase assault weapons, but could only buy the large magazines at shooting ranges.
Since responsible gun owners enjoy being able to collect and shoot these weapons, their rights to own a gun would be allowed. The gun ranges would be the only places that the large magazines could be sold. The gun owner would be required to prove that they emptied the magazine before leaving the range, to ensure that they wouldn’t be able to take them home. These magazines would not be allowed to be sold anywhere else.
The guns that Adam Lanza used were legally purchased, but if his mother had not had the ammunition in her home, he might not have been able to carry out his mission. I am still strongly in favor of better background checks. I do not own a gun and am personally against having assault weapons for sale at all, but I feel that my idea is a good compromise.

you do know that one can just buy a box of ammo and reload the magazines?
