Connecticut is a better place following gun legislation's passage

Connecticut has just became a more civilized state. No private citizen should be in possession of guns, bullets and gun magazines that can destroy dozens of lives ... not to mention the young bodies... with hundreds of bullets in a matter of moments. Our legislators and our governor have done right by the children and teachers who were so tragically slaughtered in Newtown.

It astonishes me as I read countless posts resembling this one. It's become quite clear how unenlightened this nation is. As highly restrictive gun laws creep their way in, lawmakers along with a good portion of this nation casually dismiss the most paramount amendment to exist. The very amendment that protects all other amendments and the very liberty of this nation. Yes to a certain extent Connecticut’s recent gun laws still permit the right to bear arms, but it’s the restrictions that have been put in place that dismantle our second amendment.
The second amendment was put in place by our founding fathers not for the purpose to hunt game or defense against an intruder, but for the purpose of DEFENSE AGAINST OUR OWN GOVERNMENT. Our forefathers knew all too well that power corrupts, and no nation can sustain its freedom without a WELL GUARDED MILITIA that enables the people to have a fighting chance. An outright ban on assault weapons and a limit of 10 rounds of ammunition is not exactly a well guarded militia nor is the extensive list of steps required to even be considered for accessing a supposed god given right. The second amendment is the only reason this nation has remained unscathed from genocide, another Hitler or a foreign enemy invasion, Do you think the Nazi Regime could have led millions to their death so easily if the German people were well armed or had access to AR15's with unlimited rounds? The holocaust most likely would've never occurred. The incident at Sandy Hook Elementary school was unfortunate and the fact that children were the main victims immediately deems those who oppose the new gun laws as insensitive. The new laws put in place do not change what happened and by no means prevent something similar from happening in the future. What it does create is a nation of vulnerable law abiding citizens. An amendment put in place to protect us from the very establishment that is set on taking it away. The lawmakers in this state have been praised as heroes when they have directly violated their oath to uphold and honor the Constitution. Connecticut will go down in infamy for being the first to set a precedent, a precedent that if followed can pave the way for tyranny and irreversible destruction of this country. We reside in the greatest nation on earth yet we have strayed so far from the very principles that preserve it's greatness. We the people have stood idly by as our leaders subtly eradicate the rights we are born with in the name of security.. With the passing of The Patriot Act in 2001 combined with the recently passed National Defense Authorization act single handedly shoots a magic bullet through our Bill of Rights. Now our Second Amendment is under attack. The Constitution of the United States is the very air this nation breathes yet we casually disregard it's words as we fail miserably to enforce it. We will never be exempt from tragedy, we will never be exempt from another Sandy Hook. Enacting stricter gun laws does not eliminate the problem, it only prohibits citizens who abide by the law. Tougher legislation may serve as a temporary answer to those who require one but in no way does it safeguard anyone. Regardless of what circumstances we face, or how many innocent lives are affected, taking away our rights away or restricting them does not safeguard us from another Columbine or Sandy Hook. Gun violence and violence in general is an unfortunate aspect of life. Passing stricter legislation will not change that nor will it make our children exempt from harm. The only concrete leg we have to stand on is the very document of our fore fathers. Our trust has been misplaced in our lawmakers. We have grown to rely on the leaders of this nation to dictate what we can or cannot do rather than rely on the Constitution. If we want to protect our children we can start with keeping our oath to honor and uphold the US Constitution no matter what the circumstances are. The Constitution is our only safeguard.
