Continue your child's education at home this summer

As the school year comes to a close, I am encouraging all parents to plan ahead to teach your children this summer. You are the primary source of your child’s education. You know your child better than anyone. You will spend more hours together so make them count. Children need to know the basics - reading, writing, math and history.
First, build the joy of reading with them, shopping for a book in a real bookstore, visiting the library, and discussing literature of all kinds. The newspaper is full of stories about individuals and groups who are creating and engaging in remarkable endeavors that are making a positive difference.
Secondly, you can begin a writing activity with your child that will enable both of you to stay connected with family and friends through letters, postcards, and blogs. You each could keep a daily journal which you share during a relaxing time in the evening.
Thirdly, practice basic math operations and do fundamental calculations in experiences like managing time, saving money, comparing and contrasting data, donating and cooking.
Since history really does repeat itself, make connections with current events today and historical events. Make sure your child knows about the important events in all of U.S. history. Scan maps, read primary documents of democracy in their entirety, research special topics that affected your family throughout generations. Learn about the uniqueness of your community, enjoy an outing at a historic landmark, and attend special events honoring your heritage. Get to know your neighbors and learn about their roots.
Most of all, set goals together, follow through with your plan for your own summer school, and cherish the time and ties that will bind you.
